V-League 2026-2027: VFF Officially Adopts FIFA's New Laws – Time Limits and Red Card for Mouth-Covering

That is exactly what the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) wants to eliminate with a series of new rules based on FIFA's Laws of the Game, to be applied from the 2026-2027 season. VFF has just announced a historic decision: adopting three major changes from the FIFA rulebook tested at the 2026 World Cup. First, each substitution must be completed within 10 seconds – if a team delays, the referee will allow the opponent to take a free kick or throw-in without waiting. Second, all throw-ins, goal kicks, and corner kicks must be taken within 5 seconds, with the referee counting down using hand signals. Third, goalkeepers may hold the ball for a maximum of 8 seconds; if violated, the opponent is awarded a corner kick (instead of an indirect free kick as before). Notably, a controversial new rule: a player who covers their mouth while uttering insults to the referee or opponents will receive a direct red card. On the surface, these are technical adjustments, but they fundamentally change how the game is played. I have followed Vietnamese football for over 20 years, and I see that teams accustomed to 'time-wasting' will lose their advantage. Teams with good fitness and fast counter-attacks will benefit. Imagine: the goalkeeper of the leading team cannot hold the ball for more than 8 seconds, forcing a quick release, giving the opponent an opportunity to press immediately. The 5-second throw-in rule means defenders cannot leisurely look for teammates – the ball will be launched into the opponent's box in an instant. However, I have a counter-intuitive perspective: will these rules really be effective? The biggest risk lies in inconsistent refereeing. In Vietnam, not every referee has experience counting down 5 seconds accurately, especially in tense situations. I fear the first few rounds of the season will see intense controversy over undeserved corner kicks. Moreover, the red card for mouth-covering depends on subjective judgment – a player might accidentally raise a hand to their face while speaking, but the referee considers it an insulting gesture. This could lead to shocking decisions. Nevertheless, the VFF deserves praise for proactively catching up with global trends. FIFA applied these rules at the 2026 World Cup and received positive feedback from top European leagues. VFF's introduction into the V-League next season shows ambition to elevate the league, attract spectators, and reduce unsportsmanlike behavior. I predict: after the first 4-6 chaotic weeks, players and referees will adapt, and the V-League will become more attractive, with significantly increased ball-in-play time. The question remains: are the clubs ready to train for quick restarts and fast substitutions? If not, they will pay the price on the pitch.
