U20 Vietnam: Lessons from Failure, Ambition from Home Soil

This afternoon, at the VFF youth training center, I arrived early. The September sun in Hanoi was still harsh, but on the training pitch, the young U20 Vietnam players had already started their warm-up. Head coach Yutaka Ikeuchi stood in a corner, observing every move of his students. The atmosphere was somewhat tense, but also full of determination. This was the final training session before entering the 2027 U20 Asian Cup qualifiers, and I realized that for this team, this is not just a tournament, but a chance to redeem what was lost. The context of this match is clear. U20 Vietnam is in Group C with Iran, North Korea, and Palestine. Iran is a traditional powerhouse in Asian football, North Korea is known for their physicality and fiery spirit, and Palestine, despite difficulties in assembling their squad, cannot be underestimated. Meanwhile, U20 Vietnam has just gone through a disappointing 2026 U19 Southeast Asian Championship. Coach Ikeuchi did not hide this, calling it a "big lesson" and emphasizing that the whole team has learned valuable things from it. The support from the VFF and clubs is also an important spiritual anchor, helping the team prepare in the best possible way. What I was most interested in during today's session was how the team handled set pieces and organized their defense. Coach Ikeuchi spent a considerable amount of time correcting the positioning of the center-backs in aerial duels. This could be a sign that he has studied North Korea's strengths carefully. In the earlier press conference, he admitted: "North Korea is a very strong opponent, they always have good physical and mental play." This statement shows respect, but also hints at a specific plan. The addition of players with V-League experience, as captain Nguyen Quoc Khanh shared, is a clear quality boost. These players bring the composure and courage needed for a youth tournament. However, there is a perspective that I think many might overlook. The expectation from home fans can be a double-edged sword.
