San Beda enters NCAA Season 102 as the defending champion, but the roster has been reshaped before the opening tip. Five key players are gone, and starting point guard Nygel Gonzales is out with an ACL injury. Coach Yuri Escueta now faces a title defense framed not by strength, but by uncertainty. The tactical problem is not simply replacing a star. It is rebuilding an offense that used to lean on Miller’s individual shot creation and a defense that leaned on Andrada and Celzo. The team will likely need more ball movement, more passing, and more collective discipline. That takes time. In such a competitive group, early losses could hurt playoff seeding. JRU is the preseason favorite. Mapua has a new coach, Chito Victolero, and Lyceum hired Jamike Jarin. If San Beda’s new rotation is slow to integrate, opponents will attack the inexperienced guards and force mistakes in transition. Coach Escueta remains publicly positive: “Everyone’s very positive. I’m confident in my team.” That message may steady the locker room, but it cannot replace 40 minutes of on-court execution. The answers will come only when the ball is thrown up. San Beda is no longer the clear title favorite, but it would be premature to dismiss them completely. The first five games will reveal whether the system can hold. If a young guard steps up, the Red Lions may grow into a dangerous team by the second half of the elimination round. Until then, the story is about rebuilding a team under the heaviest kind of pressure: defending a championship with fewer weapons and higher doubts.
